By the early 1980s, HKU had established several environmentally-focused academic and operational committees. In 1991, the university made a public commitment by signing the Talloires Declaration, an early statement by university leaders from around the world on the role of higher education in addressing environmental sustainability.

Over the years, the university has introduced a wide range of initiatives and programmes designed to reduce campus environmental impacts, encourage the wise use of natural resources and support research and teaching related to sustainability issues.
